I have always been someone who is into wearable art. Sweatshirts with futuristic graphics, shoes with Andy Warhol inspired prints, and jewelry modeled after cartoon shapes…I love it all! Now mix in the handmade aspect and you have a home run. There are some things you can’t get from mass production, some things that just don’t exist in tens of thousands of units. It’s nice to come across a brand, especially in 2021, that is not only unique and one of a kind, but a brand that is completely unapologetically true to its core about what it is what what it stands for… Introducing Strwbrry Wire Wraps by Emily Field.
I became immediately intrigued with Emily’s work because it was so out of the norm compared to other brands I’ve seen. Emily has this brilliant way of not only creating something so fun and happy but doing it over and over again. She creates one one of a kind piece after another, and the designs seem to effortlessly come through. This week I was honored to have received my own necklace from Emily, and let me just say, the amount of joy I got from her package (on this cold dark New York day, might I add) was literally the highlight of my week. Filled with stickers, lavender, heart shaped bubble wrap, and of course the jewelry, this little pink package was nothing short of joyful.
Besides the obvious beauty of her products, Emily has another amazing attribute to her business- everything is hand made. She is self taught and has gone far beyond her initial teachings. All designs are not only imagined by Emily but are then twisted, turned, and warped by Emily into the beautiful objects we see before us.
Simply remarkable.
Amanda: Where in the world do you create your work?
Emily: I am currently located and creating my art in sunny San Diego, CA, however Strwbrry Wire Wraps was founded and has its roots in Philadelphia, PA.
Amanda: This is such a unique product, how did you get into it?
Emily: It all started during my last semester of college in the spring of 2018. I had a lot more free time on my hands with a light load of classes and my part time job being during the day. I spent most of my nights hanging with friends, watching Netflix, and perusing twitter and instagram. I have always been a hands on person and loved art. Naturally, when a picture of a wire wrapped crystal popped up on my twitter feed, I wanted to give it a try. That night I did research on what materials I needed, and the next day I ran to Michael's to grab everything. I made a vow to myself to wrap at least one thing a day for a month to practice. Finally, after that month I felt like my work was good enough to post on social media, and thus the Strwbrry Wire Wraps was born.
Amanda: What other forms of art, music, literature, etc. inspire your work?
Emily: I really am drawn to anything with bright colors and fun themes. I love pulling inspiration from my childhood and creating whole collections based off of television and movie characters. My most recent collections have been based off of Disney Pixar & Pokemon. Those collections both had over 20 pieces and I still feel like there have been things I could have expanded on. There are so many details and avenues to explore with this topic I feel constantly inspired!
Amanda: What has been your most difficult obstacle in creating your business?
Emily: The biggest obstacle in creating my business was developing a signature style. The problem was, when I was first learning how to wrap I was doing tutorials from youtube and pulling inspiration from other artists. They looked okay alone, but more often than not when compared to the original it looked like a bad knock off which was a little damaging to my confidence. It wasn't until I started creating my own designs and pulling inspiration from the world around me, that my work started to come alive. This sounds way easier said than done however, and that's where the obstacle part comes in. Many times I doubted my work and felt I would never be good at it. I really want to drop the wire and the pliers and never pick them up again. Then one sweet girl popped into my twitter DM's one day and asked for five pendants for her and all her friends. FIVE! She asked for a sun design and that was the prototype of my now signature sun design. When I showed her the final products she was so happy and even tipped me! This experience was the springboard for my wire wrapping creativity and made me more comfortable pushing the limits of my designs and trying out new things without being afraid of failure.
Amanda: Are there any subjects or themes you return to over and over again in your art?
Emily: Childhood nostalgia is something I think we all can relate to and what I constantly reference in my work. Funny enough, my signature sun design was based on the way I used to draw the sun with crayons on paper when I was a little kid.
Amanda: If you can do anything with your business, regardless of money, social media following, business location, or experience, what would it be?
Emily: I would love to do in-person seminars and tutorials for people who are interested in wire wrapping. There is a lot of information out there and it can be daunting when you're first dipping your toe in the pool. I can't even count how many times I would pause and rewind a certain part of a youtube tutorial trying to figure out what the heck they just did. Or look down at my tools and realize I was working with a completely different set of pliers and wire than the one in the video. If I had had a real life person teach me how to wrap, I think learning the basics would have been a lot easier. Now being at the point where I am, I would love to pass on my knowledge and help the people who want to learn!
